The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team fell to the visiting Ithaca College Bombers by a score of 72-59 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Fisher (10-12, 3-8) has been eliminated from Empire 8 Championship contention.
The Bombers (10-12, 7-4), who trailed 34-29 at halftime, opened the second stanza with a 21-2 run, making sure the Cardinals were never able to get back into the game.
Fisher battled, but was only able to get within nine points, as Ithaca led by double digits for the remainder of the match.
The Cardinals held a small lead after the first half, taking a five-point advantage into the locker room. In that half, with the score tied at 17s, Jordan Gettings provided a spark for Fisher by scoring six-straight points and a recording steal, which led to a fast break basket by Justin Plata.
Gettings finished the game with 15 points, the most by any Cardinal in the contest. Thad Wier recorded 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the arc and a 2-for-2 showing at the free throw line.
Shooting efficiency played a role in the game, as Fisher shot just 37% from the field compared to Ithaca's 56% mark. The Bombers also shot 56% from behind the arc, while the Cardinals were just 35%.
On Friday, Fisher will faceoff with the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in an 8 p.m. tilt at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
