The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team fell 64-62 to the Empire 8 leading Hartwick College Hawks Saturday afternoon at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium. With the loss, Fisher falls to 10-14 in the season and 3-10 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick stays atop the Conference at 22-2, 11-2.
After senior Jordan Gettings twice brought the Cardinals within two-points, at 62-60 and 64-62, the Cardinals regained possession in the final 10 seconds looking to take the final shot of the contest. Adam Ambielli had a clear shot just before the buzzer, but the three-point attempt was too long, as it hit off the back iron and out.
Hartwick opened the second half with a spurt to take the lead, but with 5:31 remaining, Ambielli and Justin Plata hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Cardinals a 54-50 lead. Hartwick battled back, and took control of the game with a traditional three-point play at the 4:52 mark. The Hawks never trailed from that point on.
After the first half, the teams With the score 22-20 in favor of visitors, Jordan Gettings hit the Cardinals final-seven points of the half to let the home team head to the locker room with a 27-26 advantage. Gettings nailed back-to-back three-pointers and a free throw en route to his team-leading 12 first-half points.
Gettings led the Cardinals with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Plata finished with 11 points, while Ambielli added seven.
Fisher will play its final game of the season at 8 p.m. on Saturday when it welcomes East Avenue rival Nazareth College for Senior Night at Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
