The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team
fell to Stevens Institute of Technology tonight 70-56. With the loss, Fisher falls to 10-13 overall and 3-9 in the Empire 8 Conference. This will mark the first time since 1986-87 that the Cardinals will have a record below the .500 mark.
Fisher showed a real push in the early parts of the second half, coming out of the halftime break on an 11-3 run over the first 5:08 for its first lead at 44-42 since 7:37 left in the first period.
The Ducks answered right back with a run of their own to take control of the game down the stretch. Stevens went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:58 to take the 56-44 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
The teams traded buckets for most of the early portion of the first period with Fisher gaining a 21-20 lead on an
Adam Ambielli assisted 3-pointer by
Ryan Dalton. Stevens then went on a 13-5 run over the next 2:40 to give the Ducks a 33-26 advantage. With just 17 seconds remaining in the stanza
Justin Plata buried his third 3-pointer in the opening period off a pass from
Jordan Gettings to send the teams to the locker room at 39-33. Plata paced the Cardinals with 12 points and six rebounds in the first, shooting 4-for-8 from the field.
Gettings finished with a team-high 13 points while Plata led Fisher on the boards, finishing with eight rebounds.
The Cardinals will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday and will host Hartwick College.
