The St. John Fisher College men's basketball program won the Hilbert College Tip-Off Classic on Saturday, thanks to a 65-48 win over the host Hawks.
Fisher led 25-21 with 4:10 left in the first half, but went on a 12-2 run to close out the stanza to take a 37-23 lead at the break, and kept a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Classic MVP
Jason Norsen led the Cardinals with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. For the two-game tourney, the senior, playing in his hometown of Hamburg, averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks, while shooting 18-for-22 (81.8%) from the floor.
Sophomore
Thad Wier was named to the All-Classic Team after scoring 12 of his 14 points in the first half.
Freshman point guard
Chaz Lott chipped in a with a career-high 10 points and shot 2-for-2 from 3-point range. He also added five assists and two steals.
Grant Wrap came off the bench to score eight points, while
Optimystik Kinard also finished with eight points and snagged six boards.
Senior
Justin Plata totaled six points and four assists in the win as well.
With the win, Fisher improves to 2-0 for just the second time in the last eight years. The last time the Cardinals started off 3-0 was in the 2004-2005 season. That year, Fisher was the last undefeated team in all of college basketball – men's or women's – Division I, II or III – and finished with a 28-1 overall record.
Fisher will go for its third win on Wednesday, November 28
th at 8 p.m. The Cardinals will host either SUNY Brockport or SUNY Geneseo in the opening round of the 47
th Annual Wendy's College Classic – the largest and longest-running in-season tournament in college basketball.
