Volleyball Goes .500 at RIT

The St. John Fisher College volleyball team went 2-2 in the RIT Invitational that took place on Friday and Saturday. Fisher opened with a win against Buffalo State but had to wait until its final match of the weekend before it collected the second win versus St. Lawrence.

The Cardinals took Buffalo State 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) on Friday afternoon in Clark Gymnasium. Amanda Pinak and Rachael Kline both led Fisher with 11 kills, with Pinak adding six digs in the win. Senior setter Amy Street finished with 40 assists in the match, while contributing 10 digs. Kelsey Osborne led the Cardinals with 22 digs and Becca Smith aided Fisher with 13 digs and nine kills. Mandi Mereness also added eight kills in the effort.

In its next two matches Fisher hit a snag, falling to host RIT 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 15-13) in a hard fought contest that went to distance. The Cardinals then fell for the second time this season to SUNY Geneseo 3-2 (14-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13) despite winning the first game in a big way.

Fisher rebounded in its last match of the invitational with a 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-21) victory over St. Lawrence. Smith led the Cardinals with a monster game that included a team-high 21 kills and 19 digs. Street finished with 50 assists and 14 digs in the match, while Kline added 10 kills of her own. Osborne led the Cardinals again in digs with 32. Lauren Rokjer filled the stat sheet with nine kills, a dig and an assist.

With the 2-2 weekend Fisher pushes its record to 7-3 on the year. The Cardinals will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Medaille.
