Fisher Battles to 5-4 Win over Elmira

Sophomore Dan Parshall earned the deciding point for the Cardinals.
The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team battled in just over a five-hour match to earn a narrow 5-4 victory over the visiting Elmira College Soaring Eagles in Empire 8 action at the Fisher courts this afternoon.

Sophomore Daniel Parshall, undefeated in singles play in Fisher's three matches this week, battled through a four-hour, three-set match to earn the victory in a third set tiebreak, defeating Elmira's Steffan Waters 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (3) to decide the match

After going 1-2 in doubles play to begin the afternoon, Fisher earned wins in the third through the sixth positions in singles to eliminate the deficit and steal the win.

Parshall teamed with Chris Maley to earn Fisher's lone doubles point, winning 8-2 at second doubles. In singles play, Jake VanBuren cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at third, while Greg Duffy fought to a 7-6 (4) win in his first set before dominating his second set 6-2 to win at the fourth position. Maley earned his second victory of the day in a decisive 6-4, 6-1 win at sixth, and with the match tied at four points apiece, Parshall took over to make it the Cardinals'.

Fisher, now 1-1 in Empire 8 play, continues conference action as it travels to RIT to face the Tigers in a 4 p.m matchup on Tuesday.
