Men's Lax Suffers First Loss Of The Season

Nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College suffered its first loss of the season, as the No. 12 Cardinals dropped an 11-8 decision at No. 25 Ithaca College in the Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse season opener for both teams.

Fisher (7-1) trailed 2-1 after the opening quarter, but the Bombers (5-1) scored the first five goals of the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead late in the first half.

The Cardinals, who trailed 7-2 at the half, pulled to within two goals at 8-6 with less than a minute in the third.
 
Fisher, however, never got any closer as Ithaca scored the first three goals of the fourth before the Cardinals tacked on two goals in the final minute.
 
Connor Henderson and Mike Byrnes each scored two goals, while Mitch Ritchie totaled three points on one goal and two assists.
 
Eric Klein, Mike Cummins and Ryan Schmidt also scored in the loss, while Paul Leonhard assisted on a goal.
 
Erich Rassow won 13-of-21 faceoffs and finished with five ground balls. Mitch Bailey and Jeff Wester each finished with four ground balls.
 
Goalie Matt McShea stopped 10 shots in the loss.
 
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hartwick College.
