The St. John Fisher College softball team picked up two wins over the SUNY Canton Roos on day four of play at the Tucson Invitational, sweeping the Roos in 9-0, 8-4 fashion.
Game one:
Fisher 9, Canton 0
Fisher put up a solid defense in the first game of the doubleheader, allowing only 9 hits. Sophomore pitcher
Danielle Leone improved to 3-1, allowing no runs and fanning 5 batters.
Fisher got on the board when
Kelly Jones doubled in the second to knock in
Shelby Marie, who reached on a single to left field.
Jamie Harmon doubled to kick off scoring in the third, knocking in
Jennifer Vanek.
Kayla Goodberlet's single to center field then scored Harmon, before
Carissa Carlson singled to score Goodberlet.
The Cardinals added five runs over the final three innings, and then worked out of bases loaded to take the victory in six.
Game two:
Fisher 8, Canton 4
The bats were swinging as Fisher tallied 15 hits for eight runs in game two of the doubleheader.
The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the first inning when Goodberlet singled to right field to score Vanek, who singled up the middle.
Canton tied it up in the same inning, but Fisher regained the lead for good when D'Angelo scored in the second.
3 runs for Fisher in the fourth would push the lead to 5-1. Canton answered with two runs in the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals never stopped gunning, tacking on three more runs for good measure.
Sophomore
Krista Robarge pitched the entire game, fanning three batters and improving to 3-1 on the season.
Twelve Cardinals had at least one hit on the day. Harmon finished with a team-best four RBI, going 4-for-7 from the plate with two doubles. Jones matched her efforts, going 4-for-7 from the plate with two doubles and three RBI, and also added five put outs. Freshman
Jessica D'Angelo went 3-for-4 from the plate in game two with one double and one RBI. Goodberlet went 5-for-8 from the plate with one double and three RBI.
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow in their final day of play in Tucson. Fisher will face Capital University for a 10 a.m. game before re-matching Wartburg College at 12 p.m.
