The St. John Fisher College Cardinals fell in heartbreaking fashion, as RIT drowned a 3-pointer at the buzzer, sending Fisher home
with a 60-57 loss.
With the defeat, Fisher falls to 12-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play, while RIT improves to 10-10, 7-4.
The Cardinals went on a 15-2 in the first half to break a tie and hold as much as an 11-point lead, but went into the locker room leading only by four, at 28-24.
The second half saw the game tied on seven different occasions. RIT took the lead for the first time since 6-4 when Anthony Terry brought it in for two to push the Tigers to a 36-34 lead. Fisher retaliated, however, tying it back up off a lay-up from
Will Cornett.
A good free throw from the charity stripe from
Jordan Gettings tied the game at 57 with 1:05 left to play and the score stood still. With 10 seconds left, Cornett grabbed the rebound off a missed free throw from Terry, instigating the Fisher time out. A crucial turnover at midcourt with four seconds left would set RIT's Nate Korinchak up to fire a shot from just inside half court, breaking the final tie and stealing the win.
Gettings led Fisher with 18 points, while
Jason Norsen added 12 points and grabbed six boards. Senior
Brandon Witte went 5-for-7 from the floor for 11 points and added four rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 46.5% from the floor, but turnovers proved to be Fisher's Achilles heel, as the Cardinals turned the ball over 25 times as compared to the Tigers' 13.
The Cardinals return to action in another Empire 8 double header weekend as Fisher hosts Ithaca Friday night at 8 p.m., followed by Utica at 4 p.m. Saturday.
