Fisher Splits on Day Two in Tucson

The St. John Fisher College softball team opened day two with a big win over Sul Ross State of Texas, defeating the Lady Lobos 16-5 at the Tucson Invitational, before dropping the nightcap 6-5 to Capital University (Ohio) in extra innings.

Game one: Fisher 16, Sul Ross State 5

Sul Ross State got on board first with one run in the second inning, but Fisher answered quick with five runs in the third.  A single up the middle from Megan Zoerb scored Megan Rogers.  With bases loaded, Leanne Merchant stepped up and belted a double to the center field fence, scoring Zoerb and Jennifer Vanek.  The rest was history as Fisher tallied 11 more runs over the final two innings of the five-inning win.

Merchant led the Cardinals with four RBI on two doubles, while Zoerb and Rogers each added three hits. Freshman Jessica D'Angelo ripped her first career home run, tallying three RBI in the fifth inning.

With the win, sophomore pitcher Krista Robarge improved to 2-0 on the season, recording five strike outs in five innings pitched.

Game two: Capital 6, Fisher 5

In Monday's nightcap, Fisher got on the board first after Zoerb singled to left field to score Vanek, who tripled to the fence at left center at the beginning of the third inning.

The Cardinals then worked out of bases loaded in the bottom of the third, but Capital answered with three runs in the fifth inning to secure the lead.

Fisher cut away at the lead over the next two innings. In the sixth, Merchant doubled down the left field line. With freshman Michelle Townsend pinch running for her, the run was brought in on a single by Carlson. In the seventh, Jones was scored after her single by a single to left field from Vanek to send it into extra innings.

The ninth inning spelled the end for Fisher. After the Cardinals advanced two runs, with Shelby Marie scoring off of Vanek's single up the middle and her subsequent run off of Harmon's single through the left side, Capital loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and the team's pitcher slugged a single to left field to end the game.

Danielle Leone pitched an impressive 8.2 innings for the Cardinals, fanning four batters.

Vanek led all batters with three hits, two runs, and two RBI in four at bats.
