The St. John Fisher College softball team kicked off the 2011 season going 2-0 with a sweep of Milwaukee School of Engineering on day one of the Tucson Invitational in Arizona on Sunday.
Game one:
Fisher 7, MSOE 4
In game one of the double-header, senior
Jamie Harmon kicked off the scoring after singling up the middle to reach first and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by
Leanne Merchant before rounding the bags on
Carissa Carlson's ground-out to the pitcher.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, the Cardinals exploded for five runs to push their lead to 6-0 before the Raiders answered with three runs of their own in the fourth. One more run from each team late in the game would seal the 7-4 fate.
Game two:
Fisher 18, MSOE 2
Fisher came out gunning in the nightcap, scoring six in the top of the first inning. Big hits from
Shelby Marie,
Kelly Jones, and
Megan Rogers highlighted the inning.
The Cardinals added another 12 runs over the third and fourth innings, cutting the game short after five.
Marie and Jones each ended the day with a team-best four hits. Jones paired with Carlson to each add three RBI. Merchant went 2-for-2 from the plate with two doubles, while newcomers Jessica D'Angelo,
Alicia Vann,
Michelle Townsend, and
Jennifer Martin each tallied their first hits at the collegiate level.
Tomorrow, Fisher will face Sul Ross State University (Texas) at 8 a.m. before facing off against Capital University (Ohio) at 12 p.m.
