The St. John Fisher College field hockey team
fell to the Hartwick Hawks today 2-1 to deny the Cardinals their first Empire 8 victory. With the loss, Fisher drops to 1-10 (0-4) in its inaugural season.
Hartwick was the first to score, when Abby Wentlent sent a clever pass between the legs to Hiliary Carlson. Carlson knocked the ball past
Kellie Redmond to make the game 1-0 nearly 24 minutes into the game.
However, Fisher responded five minutes later when
Marissa Vedella connected after a corner. Vedella took the free position and passed to
Liz Baldwin, who returned the ball right back for the score.
But the Hawks were able to take the lead nearly three minutes before halftime, after Anna Drake scored unassisted to make the game 2-1 after 35 minutes.
Fisher had a few opportunities to score at the start of the second half, but the Cardinals were denied the equalizer by Hartwick goalkeeper Megan Campbell.
After 35 additional minutes, the score would remain the same, as Hartwick was able to hold onto its 2-1 lead for the game's final score.
Redmond finished with one save, while
Stacie Skidmore led the Cardinals with six shots.
Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the Cardinals travel to SUNY Oswego.
