St. John Fisher College's
Courtney Clare scored with nine seconds left in overtime
to give the women's lacrosse team a 10-9 win at St. Lawrence University on Sunday.
With the win, Fisher finishes its season with a 5-11 overall record, while St. Lawrence falls to 12-4.
Clare's game-winning goal came with Fisher playing down a woman, as Fisher's
Trish Scudder received a yellow-card with 1:40 left in overtime.
St. Lawrence won the ensuing draw after Clare's goal and had a chance to force another overtime period, but goalie
Vicki Sahm stopped a free position shot as the final horn sounded.
Fisher trailed for most of the game. The Saints jumped out to a 5-1 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half, but goals from
Mary Stimson and
Lauren Glavin in the final minutes of the opening period put the Cardinals down just two goals at 5-3 going into the second half.
St. Lawrence led 7-4 with 20 minutes left to go in the game before Fisher began to rally.
The Cardinals scored four straight goals and took its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 3:37 left in regulation on a free-position goal from
Meg Merriam, but the Saints forced overtime with a goal 30 seconds later.
In the first overtime period,
Mary Stimson gave Fisher a 9-8 lead with 1:27, but the Saints tied it up again, this time 19 seconds later.
Stimson led Fisher with three goals, while Scudder added two goals. Ashley Fenyn and Glavin each chipped in with one goal and one assist.
Sahm stopped 14 shots to earn the win in net.
