Nationally-Ranked Cardinals Win Ninth Straight

Scott Bowen enjoyed a three-point day on Saturday.

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team improved to 9-0 for the second straight year, as the No. 15 Cardinals held on for an 11-9 win at Hartwick College on Saturday.

The win ties the College-record for consecutive wins and best start to a season, which was set last year, when Fisher started 9-0 and finished with a 15-3 overall record.

Fisher (2-0 Empire 8) trailed 3-1 with 4:15 left in the first quarter, but the Cardinals scored three straight goals – all in an 88-second span – and never trailed again. Hartwick tied the game with 11:03 left in the second quarter, but Fisher scored the game's next four goals and kept a two-goal advantage for the rest of the game.

Fisher's Dave Malone finished with a team-best five points on two goals and three assists. Ryan Schmidt scored three goals, while Scott Bowen totaled three points on one goal and two assists.

Chris Schmidt finished with two goals. Jeff Price, Zack Fayette and Kyle Denhoff each scored a goal, while Kory Smart and Justin Tomzak each assisted on a goal.

Jon Cortina stopped 14 shots over 60 minutes in goal. Erich Rassow won 17-of-23 face-offs and totaled a team-best 10 ground balls.

Fisher will go for a program-record 10th straight win at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, hosting Keuka College at Growney Stadium.
