The St. John Fisher College softball team defeated the St. Lawrence University Saints in both games of a Friday doubleheader at Fisher Field. With the wins the Cardinals have improved to 22-14 on the season.
Meghan Graves came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and hit a grand slam over the center field fence to push the Cardinals past St. Lawrence.
Kayla Goodberlet started the bases loaded inning with a double and was followed by a single from
Carissa Carlson.
Leanne Merchant entered the batter's box and was quickly headed for first after being hit by a pitch.
Fisher held a lead the entire game until the seventh inning. Up 4-1 entering the last inning, the Cardinals needed just three outs to gain the victory. A three-run home run by the Saints clean-up hitter knotted the score at four and sent the game into extras.
Graves went 2-for-5 with four RBI while
Megan Zoerb also added two hits and a run scored.
Jamie Harmon went 3-for-4 from the dish with a run scored. Goodberlet also had three hits, crossing the plate twice. Carlson and Lauren O'Brien each had an RBI in the win.
Freshman pitcher
Danielle Leone went the complete nine innings, giving up just one earned run on ten hits while fanning eight batters.
Michelle Krier pitched a complete game three-hitter, surrendering just one earned run while striking out a career-high 13 hitters. Seven Cardinal hitters had at least one hit, including Carlson and
Jenn Vanek, each finishing with two hits. Merchant, Graves and Harmon finished with a RBI apiece.
Fisher will return to action tomorrow as it hosts a doubleheader against East Ave rival Nazareth. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
