The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles 19-8 in its Empire 8 Conference opener at home on Friday. Senior Ashley Fenyn had a career-high eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) to lead the Cardinals. With the win, Fisher is now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Fisher never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the first eight minutes. Elmira, however, scored the next three goals – all in a 3:16 span – cutting Fisher's lead to 4-3 with 18:16 left in the half. The Cardinals, however, didn't allow a goal for the rest of the half, as senior goalie Vicki Sahm made nine of her 15 saves in the opening period and the Cardinals scored six unanswered goals to lead 10-3 at the break.
The Cardinals stayed hot in the second half, as Mary Stimson scored Fisher's three goals of the final frame – all in the first five minutes of the second half. Ashley Fenyn's free position goal with 12:09 remaining put the Cardinals up 19-6.
Senior Lauren Glavin picked up four points on three goals and one assist, while classmate Trish Scudder scored twice. Sophomore Courtney Clare registered two goals and one assist, while Meg Merriam and Jackie Maynard also scored a goal.
Shannon McDermott, Kristen Zylka and Whitney Mirabito each scored their first career goals. Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will host Ithaca College.
