Eight was the magic number as the St. John Fisher College softball team swept the hosting Stevens Ducks by a score of 8-0 in both games of this afternoon's doubleheader on the road in Hoboken, N.J.
With the wins, Fisher improves to 12-10 overall and 3-1 in Empire 8 contests.
Game One Box Score
The Cardinals were quiet until the fourth inning, when
Megan Zoerb kicked things off with a single up the middle. Lauren O'Brien's sacrifice bunt advanced Zoerb to third, with O'Brien reaching first on an error.
Meghan Graves singled to left field to bring Zoerb in, and
Kayla Goodberlet singled to bring in two runs right after.
Kelly Jones doubled down the left field line, scoring Graves, to round off a four-run inning.
The Ducks failed to answer, and Fisher continued its scoring trend with three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a hit more from Goodberlet and Jones, who earned one RBI and two RBIs, respectively.
The Cardinals capped it off in the six with a final run, with Zoerb scoring off a double down the left field line from
Carissa Carlson.
Goodberlet and Jones were each 2-for-3 from the plate to lead the Cardinals on the offensive.
Danielle Leone took the win on the mound, improving to 7-3 on the season, allowing only two hits, no runs, and striking out seven Ducks.
Game Two Box Score
Fisher kept a steady streak in the second game, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth.
Fired up, the Cardinals scored five runs in the fourth. Carlson and O'Brien each scored on wild pitches before a single from
Jamie Harmon brought Graves in. Goodberlet's homer scored herself and Harmon to push Fisher to an eight-run lead.
With no answer from the Ducks, the Cardinals took the win after only five innings.
Goodberlet repeated her performance, going 2-for-3 from the plate with one home run, while Harmon was also 2-for-3.
Michelle Krier improved to 2-3 on the season, pitching a phenomenal five innings with only one hit allowed and striking out 10 batters for the Ducks.
Fisher returns to action tomorrow afternoon as it continues conference play on the road against Elmira. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
