GAME ONE: Fisher improved to 5-4 on the season with its third win over Neumann this week,
defeating the Knights 6-1.
Fisher got on the board right off the bat, with
Kayla Goodberlet's RBI to knock in
Samantha Vara, who doubled to left center to get on base. The Knights didn't have a chance to respond after a double play from
Megan Zoerb abruptly ended their first at bat.
Fisher increased its lead to 3-0 in the third inning, with Lauren O'Brien scoring on Zoerb's RBI, and Zoerb being pushed in off Goodberlet's second RBI of the game.
Neumann saw its best scoring opportunity in the fourth, but managed to get just one on the board before freshman pitcher
Sarah Stefanon took control and struck out two batters.
The fifth inning proved to be the most active for Fisher's bats. With Vara and O'Brien owning first and second, Zoerb hit a flawless sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners. Goodberlet recorded her third and fourth RBIs when her single brought Vara and O'Brien in. Goodberlet beat the throw home on
Carissa Carlson's single, rounding off the scoring for the Cardinals and giving them what would turn out to be a five-run lead.
Stefanon picked up her first win of the season, improving her record to 1-2 overall. Goodberlet finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, while O'Brien hit 2-for-3.
GAME TWO: Fisher turned the tables against the Alvernia Crusaders,
blanking them 14-0 and ending the game early on the final day of play at the Tucson Invitational.
Fisher came out gunning, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with runs from Zoerb, Goodberlet, and Carlson. The Cardinals were started up by a single from Zoerb, who then advanced to second on a passed ball. Goodberlet chimed in with a hard double out to the fences in left field, scoring Zoerb. Carlson walked to get on bag, and both runners were brought in on a rocket out to right field from Megan Graves.
Alvernia failed to answer in its first and second at bats, leaving Fisher the opportunity to advance to a four-run lead in the top of the third. Graves recorded her third RBI of the day, firing a double to centerfield that brought in
Leanne Merchant, who singled to left field.
Fisher held off a feisty Alvernia in the bottom of the third, with freshman pitcher
Danielle Leone controlling from the mound.
Fisher responded with a two-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, Vara and Zoerb scoring. With two outs and bases loaded, a pop up to third from Graves ended the inning with the Cardinals holding a 6-0 lead.
The sixth inning proved noteworthy, with the Cardinals running through the batting order plus some, bringing in eight runs and pushing their lead to an uncatchable 14 runs.
Leone led the Cardinals from the mound, improving to 4-1 on the season.
The Cardinals wrapped up play at the Tucson Invitational with a 6-4 start to the season. Fisher returns to action at the end of the month, when it travels to Buffalo to take on Medaille College on March 29 at 3 p.m.
