Softball Swept by Rochester

Megan Zoerb was 2-for-4 in game one with two doubles to right field.
The St. John Fisher College softball team dropped two to the hosting Yellowjackets of the University of Rochester on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Game One (Box Score): Megan Zoerb led Fisher, batting 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to right field, while Jenn Vanek ripped a triple in the third, and Meghan Graves chipped in with a double in the fourth.

Fisher took a 1-0 lead in the third. Vanek's triple down the left field line passed a diving left fielder. Samantha Vara's sacrifice fly to right field would score Vanek, earning Fisher's only run of the game.

Rochester tied it in bottom of the third.

In the top of the eighth, Fisher missed a chance to move in front. With one out, Vara singled up the middle. Zoerb doubled to right center, moving Vara to third. Rochester pitcher Sara Hutchinson slipped a third strike past Megan Rogers, then retired Leanne Merchant on a fly to center.

In one stretch, pitcher Danielle Leone retired 15 of 16 hitters. Leone worked 7.1 innings, allowing 6 hits, three runs (two earned), walked one and struck out three. Leone falls to 5-2 on the year.

Game Two (Box Score): Fisher saw a slow start, trailing 3-0 after three innings. The Cardinals narrowly missed scoring opportunities in the fifth, when several Yellowjacket errors put Kristin McCoy and Lauren O'Brien on the bags. Vanek sacrified McCoy and O'Brien, but Rochester escaped when pitcher Madeline Skellie struck the next two batters out.

With one out in the sixth, Fisher recorded its solo run of the game from Jamie Harmon. Harmon singled, advanced to second on an error and to third on a single up the middle from McCoy. O'Brien singled through the left side, scoring Harmon.

Sarah Stefanon took the loss from the mound for Fisher. Stefanon allowed three runs (two earned), and seven hits. The freshman pitcher worked out of a bases-loaded one out jam in the sixth, but it wasn't enough to save the Cardinals. Stefanon falls to 1-3 on the season.
