Women's Lacrosse Drops Wild One To William Smith

In a game that saw several team and individual records get broken, St. John Fisher College dropped a 22-21 decision to visiting William Smith College, in a wet and wild women's lacrosse matchup on Tuesday at Fisher's Growney Stadium.

The game marked the most goals scored in a game by Fisher in its 11-year history, while senior Lauren Glavin set the single-game record for goals (8) and points (11). The 43 goals scored by both teams were the most combined goals scored in a game, while the 22 goals allowed were the most by a Fisher team since 2000.

Glavin also became the College's all-time leader in goals scored with 152 in the contest. She already ranks as Fisher's all-time leader in total points (221) and assists (69).

Senior Ashley Fenyn scored a career-high seven goals, while Meg Merriam finished with five goals and one assist.   Trish Scudder also scored in the contest.

Fisher (0-4) has now lost two games by one goal and one contest in overtime.

The Cardinals trailed 9-8 at intermission, but the Herons scored four goals in an 80-second span early in the second half to take a 13-8 lead.

William Smith pushed its lead to 17-11 with 21:06 left in the contest, but the Cardinals scored four goals in the next 2:27, three of which came from Glavin, pulling Fisher to back within two goals at 17-15 with just under 19 minutes to go.

The Herons scored four of the next five goals and led by five again at 21-16 with 7:27 left, before the Cardinals ended the game with 5-1 run. Fenyn scored Fisher's last goal on a free position shot with just over one minute left. The Cardinals won the ensuing draw and had a chance to tie the game, but Merriam was stopped at point-blank range with 14 seconds left.

Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will host nationally-ranked Hamilton College.
