Third-seeded Nazareth College rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final 10 minutes of the game and
posted a 65-64 win over host St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 Conference title game on Saturday. With the win, Nazareth earns the automatic bid the NCAA Division III Championship, while the Cardinals, who are ranked No. 1 in the East Region and 22nd nationally, will most likely receive an at-large bid to the national tournament.
Fisher led 33-29 at intermission and opened the second half with a 7-1 run over the first four minutes to take a 10-point lead.
The Cardinals led by as many as 12 points with just under 10 minutes, but the Golden Flyers rallied.
Nazareth went on a 13-2 run over a four-minute span and took its first lead of the half on a 3-pointer from Corey McAdam with 4:22 left at 59-58.
In the final minute, Fisher took its last lead at 64-63 on a layup from Matt Newman with 39 seconds left. With 6.5 seconds left, McAdam made two free throws for the final points of the game. Connor Henderson's 3-pointer at the boxer came up short.
For Nazareth (18-9), McAdam led all scorers with 26 points, including 22 in the second half. Phil Scaffili added 11, while Tyshun Stevens scored nine. For Fisher (22-5), Michael Wopperer finished with 18 points, while Jordan Koch added 10.
