Men's Basketball Downs Alfred in E8 Opener

The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team won its Empire 8 Conference season opener, as the Cardinals downed visiting Alfred University 59-53 on Sunday.

Alfred took a 19-13 lead with 10:08 left on a 3-pointer from Sean Curran, but the Fisher defense tightened up soon after.

The Saxons didn't make a field goal for the remainder of the first half and their only three points came on free throws in the final 73 seconds, ending a scoreless drought of nearly nine minutes, as Fisher (2-5 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) took a 33-23 lead at halftime.

Fisher kept its lead for the remainder of the game with freshman Brent Harder scoring 11 of his season-high 15 points in the second half.

Jordan Koch finished with 10 points, while Brandon Witte and Zachary Messinger each added seven. Grant Wrap totaled eight rebounds and six points, while Jason Norsen chipped in with six points and three blocked shots in his first action of the season.

Fisher will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will host Carnegie Mellon University.
