The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team won its Empire 8 Conference season opener,
as the Cardinals downed visiting Alfred University 59-53 on Sunday.
Alfred took a 19-13 lead with 10:08 left on a 3-pointer from Sean Curran, but the Fisher defense tightened up soon after.
The Saxons didn't make a field goal for the remainder of the first half and their only three points came on free throws in the final 73 seconds, ending a scoreless drought of nearly nine minutes, as Fisher (2-5 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) took a 33-23 lead at halftime.

Brent Harder scoring 11 of his season-high 15 points in the second half.
Fisher will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will host Carnegie Mellon University.
