The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team ended the 2008-09 season
with an 8-1 win over host Utica College.
The Cardinals, who finish the season with a 7-12 overall record, including 4-4 in the Empire 8, won all but the sixth single match en route to the win.
Seniors Mike O'Connor and Karl Schiefer paired up for an 8-2 first doubles win, and earned another pair of Fisher points with straight-sets wins at second and third singles to close out their careers.
Freshman John Whelehan, who teamed with classmate Chris Maley for a hard-fought 8-6 win at third doubles, won his fifth singles match 6-0, 6-1, while Jake Van Buren won 6-1, 6-4 at third singles.
Although the team began the season just 1-5 with its spring trip to Hilton Head, SC, Fisher rallied to win its final three matches, including a 9-0 win over SUNY Oswego.
