The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team escaped host Keuka College with a 6-4 non-conference win on Saturday.
After a building a 6-2 lead following back-to-back unassisted goals from Mike Cummins and Ryan Schmidt nearing the end of the fourth quarter, Keuka seized momentum and pulled to within two. The Storm registered a pair of goals in just 21 seconds to make the score 6-4 with 8:20 to play in the game.
Fisher maintained possession of the ball in Kueka's end of the field for several minutes, until a costly turnover gave Keuka a chance to trim the lead again. The Storm worked their offense and came just inches away from taking the lead, as two shots caromed off the post in the final 70 seconds of action.
Keuka kept the pressure on and had a one-on-one chance to score with just 14 seconds remaining after an attackman broke free, but Fisher goalie
Jon Cortina came through with one of his nine saves, this one from point-blank range, to preserve the win.
Fisher (11-2 overall, 3-2 Empire 8) will return to action a 4 p.m. on Wednesday for a critical conference matchup against visiting Nazareth College.
