Fisher's Pepicelli Resigns To Become Clemson University's Pitching Coach

Dan Pepicelli will leave Fisher after leading the Cardinals to the postseason in each of his final seven seasons.
Dan Pepicelli, St. John Fisher College baseball's winningest head coach, will resign, effective Friday, October 2nd.

Pepicelli will leave Fisher and start next week as Clemson University's pitching coach. The Tigers, who compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) are led by head coach Jack Leggett, who has posted a 1101-621-1 record in 30 years of coaching at the Division I level. Last year, Clemson went 44-22, before bowing out in the Tempe Super Regional, one game shy of Clemson's sixth College World Series.

During his nine-year career at Fisher, Pepicelli guided the Cardinals to a 200-136-1 overall record. Fisher advanced to the postseason in each of his final seven years, including Fisher's first NCAA Division III Championship berth in 2007.   The Cardinals also won ECAC Upstate Championship titles in 2009, 2007, 2005 and 2004.

While the Cardinals enjoyed immense success on the diamond, it was ultimately his team's sportsmanship under duress that garnered national attention.

In the ninth inning against visiting SUNY Oswego in the 2008 ECAC Championship, a line-drive foul ball struck an Oswego coach in the temple as he was coaching third base. Despite the fact that the Cardinals were trailing 9-5, Pepicelli and the team elected to concede the game, effectively ending any chance at back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances. Fisher was honored by the Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct with the NCAA's All-Divisions Sportsmanship Award for its courageous decision.

Pepicelli, who was an All-Region centerfielder in his playing days at SUNY Cortland, had also coached baseball at Hartwick College, where he was the assistant coach from 1996–1998 and the head coach from 1999–2000. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist and is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

“Obviously Dan has a done a great job with our baseball program both on and off the field,” says Fisher Director of Athletics Bob Ward, now in his 23rd year at the College. “We're going to miss him, but at the same time, we're very excited for him and this great opportunity.”
