The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday, as the Cardinals dropped a 52-51 decision at Hartwick College.
With the loss, Fisher falls to 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the Empire 8. It is the first time in the last 22 meetings that Hartwick has beaten Fisher.
Hartwick led 39-38 with 9:41 left, but the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes and left by as many as eight at 47-39 with 5:47 remaining.
Fisher scored its final field goal of the game with 3:44 left on a jumper from
Michael Wopperer to make 49-42, but the Hawks hung in there and re-took the lead at 50-49 with 29 seconds left.
Matt Newman made two free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Cardinals the lead again at 51-50, but Hartwick regained the lead just eight seconds later at 52-51. Fisher attempted three shots on its final possession, but the first two attempts were blocked and a 3-pointer by
Ozell Franklin at the buzzer missed.
Franklin led the Cardinals with 13 points, while Wopperer added 12.
The Cardinals will return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Stevens Institute of Technology.
