Fisher Battles Back To Beat Rochester In Chase Semifinals

Ozell Franklin scored a career-high 22 points to lead No. 4 St. John Fisher College to a 71-66 win over No. 1 University of Rochester on Friday in the semifinals of the 43rd Annual JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Men's Basketball Tournament.

With the win, Fisher (11-2) advances to Saturday's title game and will play  No. 7 Nazareth at 8 p.m. at R.I.T.   The Cardinals are now 24-11 all-time in Chase Tournament semifinals and will be looking to win the program's ninth tournament title.
 
Fisher took its first lead of the game with 7:44 left on a pair of free throws from Franklin, giving the Cardinals a 52-51 lead. The free throws were the fifth and sixth points in a key 9-0 run by the Cardinals. Franklin also capped the spurt with a 3-pointer – his third of the day.
 
Rochester (10-3) trimmed Fisher's lead down to one point at 64-63 on a layup from Marcus Roberson. Fisher's Matt Newman pushed his team's lead back to two points at 65-63 with a made free throw. 
 
On Rochester's next possession, Roberson went to the line with 38 seconds left and a chance to tie the game, but missed both free throws. Fisher freshman Jordan Gettings pushed the Cardinals' lead back up to four with two free throws with 30 seconds left, sealing the win for the Cardinals.
 
For Fisher, Gettings finished with 13 points and five assists, while Brandon Witte added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Newman and Connor Henderson each scored nine.
 
Rochester, who shot an amazing 7-of-9 from 3-point range over the opening 20 minutes, led 38-34 at intermission.   The Yellowjackets were led by freshman Nate Novosel, who finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Roberson added 14, while Mike Chmielowiec and Mike Labanowski each added 11. Both Chmielowiec and Labanowski scored all of their points in the first half.
