The St. John Fisher College baseball team defeated host University of Rochester 6-3 on Wednesday, in the opener of a two-game series between the rivals. Game two will be played at Fisher on Friday with the opening pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. With the win, Fisher improves to 22-9-1, while Rochester falls to 27-10.
Sophomore
Jon Gibbs (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) drove in three runs, two of which came in the first inning on a two-run homer that put the guests ahead to stay. He also added an RBI groundout in the second as Fisher jumped to a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore
Andrew Van Slyke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Rome) earned the win on the mound to improve to his record to 3-3, while senior
Greg McKeown (Avon/Avon) allowed three hits over the final 3.2 innings to earn his first career save.
With the score 5-3, McKeown escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth inning and gave up just two singles over the final three innings with no runner reaching second.
VanSlyke worked 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned), with one walk and two strikeouts.
Marc Montesano (New Hartford/New Hartford) went 2-for-5 on the day with a triple and scored a run on a single from
Dave Convertini (Williamsville East/Williamsville).
Sophomores
John Quartironi (Williamsville East/Williamsville) and
Jason Nevada (Greece Arcadia/Rochester) each singled and scored a run.
After Friday’s game, Fisher will play three straight doubleheaders, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology.
