Men's Tennis Clinches E8 Berth With Win Over Nazareth

The St. John Fisher College men’s tennis team clinched the No. 3 seed in this weekend’s Empire 8 Conference Championship with a 6-3 win over Nazareth on Friday. 
 
Fisher won two out the three doubles matches on Friday, including an 8-1 victory by the duo of Donnie Sherman (Elmira Southside/Elmira) and Karl Schiefer (Liverpool/Liverpool) in second doubles.
 
In singles play, Sherman (6-4, 6-1) and Scheifer (6-4, 6-3) each won in straight sets, and were joined by Phil Coleman (Geneva/Geneva), who rallied from a first set loss to win the second set and the tiebreak, and freshman Jake VanBuren (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua) on the winner’s side.

The third-seeded Cardinals will take on No. 2 seed Ithaca College at Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday in the opening round of the Conference Tournament, with the winner advancing to face the winner of the No. 1 Stevens/ No. 4 R.I.T. on Sunday.
