Baseball Wins Game Two Over Ithaca

Jason Nevada picked up two hits in Saturday's win over the Bombers.

The St. John Fisher College baseball team gave Ithaca College its first loss in the Empire 8 Conference on Saturday, as the Cardinals defeated the Bombers 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader.  Fisher lost the first game 3-2.  The Cardinals will host Ithaca College for two more games tomorrow.

Game One: Ithaca 3, Fisher 2
The visiting Bombers got on the board with an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the first.  Ithaca held the lead until the third inning, when Dave Roth (Churchville-Chili/Rochester) singled up the middle to score senior pitcher/infielder Chad King (C.W. Baker/Plainsville).  Ithaca took the lead again in the fourth, and broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with an RBI single through the left side.

In the pitcher’s duel, King went the distance for Fisher, and allowed just one earned run in the loss, while Ithaca’s Shane Wolf also pitched seven, and struck out seven in the win.

Andrew Van Slyke (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Rome) and King each picked up two hits for Fisher.

Game Two: Fisher 5, Ithaca 4
Fisher scored a run in their first at bat in the nightcap, and added two more runs in the second, one of which came on an RBI from Jason Nevada (Greece Arcadia/Rochester) to claim a 3-0 lead.  The Bombers rallied for two runs in the third, but an RBI from Roth in the fifth, and a six-out save from senior Justin Lutes (Charles O. Dickerson/Trumansburg) preserved the win.

Lutes became Fisher’s career saves leader in the win, and combined with Dan Jurik (Vestal/Vestal) to throw a three-hitter.

Nevada led Fisher from the plate, picking up two hits (2-for-3) in the win.
