The St. John Fisher College softball team rebounded from an 8-3 loss to the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader to win the finale 11-1 on a grand-slam from freshman McKenzie Cinelli (Emporia/Emporia, KS) in five innings.
Game One - Nazareth 8, Fisher 3
The Cardinals managed just two hits in the first game, but scored three runs in the top half of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Nazareth rallied for three run in the bottom half the the inning to reclaim the lead, and added three more runs in their final at bat to take the win.
Freshman Melissa Blakeney (Vestal/Vestal) pitched six innings and struck out three batters in the loss.
Game Two - Fisher 11, Nazareth 1 (five innings)
In stark contrast to the opener, the Fisher bats got hot early in the second game, plating four runs on five hits, including a two-run homer from Nicole Middleton (Hudson Falls/Fort Edward), in their first at bat of the nightcap.
The Cardinals, who plated another pair of runs in the third inning, brought the mercy rule into effect in the fifth inning when Cinelli blasted her third home run of the season with the bases loaded.
Middleton, and Sara Dresser (Medina/Medina) each went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, while Amanda Shevchuk (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius) scattered five hits and struck out eight batters in the win.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday to take on host Medaille College.
