Career-Highs From Newman, Smalt and McKeever Lift Cardinals to Win

Isaiah Smalt netted a career-high 17 points in the win over Ithaca.

The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team earned a tough victory on the road on Friday night, posting a 93-87 win over the Ithaca College Bombers.

Fisher enjoyed career-highs in scoring from high school teammates Matt Newman (Campbell Savona/Campbell) (22 points) and Isaiah Smalt (Campbell-Savona/Savona) (17 points).  Senior forward Justin Beigel (Colerain/Cincinnati, OH) chipped in with 22, while classmate Mike McKeever (Indian River/Philadelphia) also tallied a career-high 13 points, including a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point range.

Fisher opened the game with a 13-2 run over the opening four minutes, but the Bombers stormed back with a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the contest at the 7:30 mark of the first half.

The Cardinals enjoyed a three-point halftime lead (44-41), and built their lead up to as many as 11 points (60-49) before the Bombers came charging back yet again.  Ithaca trimmed a seven-point Fisher lead with a 13-3 run over a four minute span to take their second lead of the contest with 4:17 to play.  The Cardinals sealed the contest from the charity stripe, connecting on 12 free throws in the final four minutes of the game.

Sean Burton scored 37 points for the Bombers, pushing him over the 1,000 point mark for his career.

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday to take on host R.I.T.
