Women's Basketball Hangs On To Beat Naz

St. John Fisher College’s Allison Boehm (Sacred Heart/Cheektowaga) of the women’s basketball team scored a career-high 30 points to lift the Cardinals to a 55-53 win at East Avenue rival Nazareth College on Tuesday.

Fisher (3-1 Empire 8, 8-5 overall) led the entire way, but held on in the closing moments to preserve the win.

With 8:8 seconds left, Boehm missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw and a missed put-back by Mary Kate Comfort (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) gave the Golden Flyers the ball with 4:8 seconds left.   Nazareth attempted a 15-foot shot at the buzzer, but the ball, which touched nearly every inch of the iron, didn’t fall through the bottom of the net.

Fisher led 18-4 over the first 10 minutes, but the Golden Flyers trimmed the Cardinals’ lead to 32-25 at halftime, with Boehm scoring 18 of Fisher’s first-half points.

Fisher pushed its lead back up to 11 points midway the second half, before the Golden Flyers cut Fisher’s lead to two points on three different occasions, but never got any closer.

Boehm shot 12-of-22 from the floor and snagged nine rebounds to go with two steals and two blocked shots.

Meagan Tubbs (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) finished with seven points, five steals and four assists, while Colleen Maloney (Liverpool/Liverpool) also scored seven points.

Fisher will return to action at 6 p.m. on Friday and will host Stevens Institute of Technology.  The Ducks are 8-0 in the Empire 8 and own a 12-3 overall record.
