The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over East-Avenue rival Nazareth College on Saturday in the Cardinals first Empire 8 Conference game of the season. Fisher's Luke Lennox (Harley/Rochester) recorded the first hat-trick at Fisher since the 2002 season to lead the Cardinals to victory.
Lennox, who leads the Cardinals and the Empire 8 in goals (seven), and points (19), scored the only goal of the first half, when he got the ball inside the box and put a shot past the keeper in the top right.
Fisher defenders Anthony Hinds-Fritz (Kenmore East/Cheektowaga), Brennan Canty (Hornell/Hornell), Brad Ervin (Elmira Free Acaademy/Elmira), and Carlos Martinez (Iroquois/Lancaster) held the Nazareth forwards in check, and helped to record the Cardinals' second shutout of the season.
In the second half, Lennox added another goal, when he went to goal alone in the 59th minute, to give the Cardinals a two-goal advantage.
Fisher went ahead 3-0 in the 75th minute when Cris Martinez (Iroquois/Lancaster), the younger brother of defenseman Carlos, passed to freshman Michael Rooney (McQuaid/Pittsford), who made a diving kick to score his second goal of the season. Lennox added his third goal of the game to complete the first hat-trick since 2002, when Joe Dyl recorded three goals in Fisher's 9-0 win over D'Youville College in the 78th minute.
Fisher keeper Adam Durst (Gates-Chili/Rochester) recorded seven saves, including a diving save to his in the opening half.
Fisher (6-2, 1-0 Empire 8), who has now doubled last year's win total, will return to action on Tuesday to take on host Hobart.
