Men's Soccer Downs SUNY Oneonta

Matt Guinto volleyed in the game-winning goal, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1 win over former Division I powerhouse SUNY Oneonta.

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team defeated the host SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons 2-1 on Thursday.  Freshman Matt Guinto (Manlius-Pebble/Syracuse) broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Cardinals to victory in the 89th minute off of a Luke Lennox (Harley/Rochester) through-pass. Just two years ago, Oneonta was an NCAA Division I program.

Cris Martinez (Iroquois/Lancaster) gave Fisher the initial lead when he went to goal alone in the 35th minute.  Just four minutes later, the Red Dragons made the score one all on a cross from the right sidelines to the top of the box.  The two teams battled for nearly 50 minutes before Fisher scored the game-winner.  Fisher keeper Adam Durst (Gates-Chili/Rochester) recorded seven saves, including three stops while the score was tied.

Fisher (5-2) will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday to take on East-Avenue rival Nazareth Colege under the lights of Fisher's Growney Stadium.
