The St. John Fisher College men’s tennis team went 1-2 at the Empire 8 Conference Championship this weekend and placed fourth overall.
Fisher, the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament, defeated Utica College 8-1 in the opening round, but lost to Ithaca College, who went on to win the championship, 7-2 on Saturday in the semifinals. In Sunday’s third-place match, Nazareth College beat Fisher,7-2.
In the win over Utica,
Joe Koehler (Hornell/Hornell) and
Brian Kohler (Spencerport/Spencerport) won 8-1 at third doubles.
Kohler also earned a point at sixth singles.
Mike O’Connor (Bishop Grimes/Syracuse) and
Phil Coleman (Geneva/Geneva) won all eight games at second doubles, while junior
Donnie Sherman (Elmira Southside/Elmira) and freshman
Matt Aquino (Fairport/Fairport) prevailed 8-4 at first doubles.
Aquino won 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, while
Coleman and
O’Connor won by the same score at third singles and fifth singles, respectively.
Tim Adler (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls) won in straight sets at fourth singles.
In the Ithaca match, O’Connor won at fifth singles, while Kohler prevailed at sixth singles.
Against Nazareth, the doubles duo of
Jack Forrest (Elmira Southside/Elmira) and
Karl Schiefer (Liverpool/Liverpool) earned a point with an 8-5 win at second doubles, while O’Connor posted a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win at fifth singles.
Fisher finishes the 2007 season with an 8-11 record.
