Fisher Improves to 8-3 With Win Over Elmira

The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team picked up a key conference victory on Saturday, as the Cardinals defeated visiting Elmira College 19-6.

With the win, Fisher improves to 8-3 on the year and 3-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.  If the Cardinals can win one of their last two conference games (they will play Utica College next Saturday and Nazareth College on April 24th) they will earn one of the four spots in the Empire 8 Championship for the second straight year.

Fisher, who had lost the five previous meetings against Elmira, got two goals each from Matt Hargather (Fairport/Fairport) and Chris Schmidt (West Genesee/Syracuse) in the game’s opening nine minutes and never looked back.  Hargather finished the game with five goals and one assist, while Schmidt totaled four goals and two assists.

Freshman Dave Malone (Penfield/Penfield) totaled a career-high nine points and tied the Fisher single-game record for assists in a game with seven.  He also scored a goal in the second and fourth quarters.

Fellow freshman Jeff Price (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Lima) scored three goals for the second time in his career, while junior Mike Cortina (Binghamton/Binghamton) also enjoyed a three-point day, tallying two goals and one assist.

Senior Zack Zazzara (Fayetteville-Manlius/Syracuse) finished with one goal and one assist, while Jason Brannigan (East Syracuse-Minoa/Minoa) and Scott Bowen (Binghamton/Binghamton) also scored a goal.

Sophomore Dave Wood (Vestal/Vestal) came through with another solid performance, winning 16-of-19 faceoffs, while collecting a game-high nine ground balls.

Senior Brian Cummings (West Genesee/Syracuse) played the first 37 minutes of the game in goal to earn his seventh winning of the season.  Jon Cortina (Binghamton/Binghamton) and James Glowina (St. Joseph’s/Grand Island) combined to make six saves.

Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Monday and will host SUNY Brockport.
