The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team nearly defeated nationally-ranked William Smith College on Wednesday, but let a three-goal lead midway through the second half get away, as the Herons, ranked 15th in the latest national coaches poll, rallied to defeat the visiting Cardinals 10-8.
Fisher led 1-0 just 80 seconds into the game, but William Smith scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 midway through the first half. The Cardinals, however, scored four of the game's next five goals and led 5-4 at intermission.
In the second half, Fisher extended its lead to three goals. Katie Glavin scored with 27 minutes left in the game and Haley Koperski made it 7-4 just six minutes later.
William Smith responded with four goals in a 4:27 to take the lead. Fisher tied the game at 8-8 with 7:57 left, but the Heron's converted their third straight free-position shot with just over six minutes left to take the lead for good.
Laurie Quackenbush finished the game with one goal and two assists, while Lauren Glavin and Koperski each scored twice. Freshman Ashley Fenyn chipped in with a goal and assist.
