The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team rallied to tie the game at 55 with 4:02 left to play, but failed to capitalize before the visiting D’Youville College Spartans took the lead for good, and
earned a 62-55 decision over the Cardinals.
D’Youville built up its lead to 10 points (46-36) in the second half before the Cardinals went on a 19-9 run over an 8:58 span highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from senior captain
Allison Boehm (Sacred Heart/Cheektowaga). The Spartans rallied back, however, and sealed the game with five free-throws over the final 1:29 of the game to improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Cardinals, who trailed the entire first half of the game, shot just 31.8% (7-of-22) from the floor in the opening period, while the Spartans got hot from behind the 3-point line, connecting on 6-of-15 first-half 3-pointers.
Boehm carried the Cardinals in the second period, recording 17 of her team-high 22 points in the final 20 minutes of action, while sophomore center
Mary Kate Comfort (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
Amanda Lax (Warwick Valley/Warwick) added six points and six rebounds for Fisher. Freshman point guard
Lyndsay Murphy (Hornell/Almond) totaled five points and four assists, while
Stephanie Sweeney (Colonie/Albany) dished out five assists, and recorded two points.
The Spartans were paced by Rachel Placito, who led all scorers with 24 points, including 17 in the first half, on 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Christine Halter also recorded an impressive performance with 17 points and 16 rebounds in the win.
Fisher (5-3, 1-1 Empire 8) will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday to take on host Alfred University in another Empire 8 Conference matchup.
