Fisher Uses Stifling Defense To Beat Geneseo

The St. John Fisher College men’s basketball team went on an 8-0 run over final 6:15 and defeated visiting SUNY Geneseo 63-62 on Saturday night.

Fisher senior Dan McSweeney (Marcellus/Marcellus) gave Fisher its first lead since the opening minutes with a free throw with 4.4 seconds left to put Fisher up 63-62.  Geneseo in-bounded the ball from its own baseline with 2.1 seconds left and attempted a full-court pass, but Justin Beigel
(Colerain/Cincinnati, OH) deflected the ball and prevent a last-second shot from happening.

McSweeney scored a career-high 25 points, while shooting 11-for-13 from the floor.  He also added nine rebounds and three steals.

Beigel finished with 12 points and eight boards, while Dan Mueller (Waterloo/Waterloo) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.  Freshman Chris Baltz (Vestal/Vestal) also scored seven points.

Junior Mike McKeever (Indian River/Philadelphia) scored six points on two 3-pointers.  Isaiah Smalt (Campbell-Savona/Savona) and Matt Newman (Campbell-Savona/Campbell) each finished with three points, while Smalt snagged seven boards.

Fisher (4-1) will return to action at 8 p.m. on December 29th and will face SUNY Cortland in the opening round of the White Rose City Classic, hosted by York College (PA).
