The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team overcame a seven-point halftime deficit and defeated visiting University of Rochester 69-67 in overtime on Thursday.
Fisher (3-1) took a 42-41 lead with 15:15 left in the second half, but the Yellowjackets regained the lead and led by as many as six with eight minutes left.
Freshman Matt Newman gave Fisher a 59-58 lead with just under three minutes left in regulation, but Rochester scored the next four points on a layup from Jeff Juron and two free throws from Mike Chmielowiec. Newman pulled the Cardinals to within one with two more free throws at 62-61 with 57 seconds left.
With 26.4 seconds left in regulation, Uche Ndubizu missed two free throws. Fisher tied the game at 62 with Dan McSweeney making one of two free throws with 10.1 seconds left. Rochester failed to get a shot off on its final possession in regulation.
In overtime, Dan Mueller knocked down a long 3-pointer with 2:00 left to give Fisher a 69-65 lead. Tim Brackney pulled Rochester to within a layup with a minute left, but neither team scored in the final minute.
Jon Onyiriuka blocked a Fisher shot with 30 seconds left to give the Yellowjackets the game's final possession. Brackney attempted two shots - both of which were blocked -- with just over 10 seconds left. Juron drove the lane in the closing moments, but McSweeney poked the ball away to seal the win.
McSweeney finished with 19 points, six rebounds and six steals, while Newman scored a career-high 12 points. Isaiah Smalt finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Chmielowiec totaled 16 points for Rochester, while Juron and Onyiriuka each added 15. Juron also dished out nine assists.
