St. John Fisher University Athletics

Alexis Zakala (Rome Free Academy/Rome) of the field hockey team has been selected as the St. John Fisher College Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 9, 2014.

The defender scored her 10th career goal and her sixth of the year in Fisher’s 3-0 semifinal victory over No. 3 seed Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. Zakala found the back of the net after following through on her rebound, putting the Cardinals up 2-0.

The senior captain saw Fisher fall to top-seed Utica College 3-0 for the second consecutive year in the Empire 8 Championship game on Sunday. Despite the loss, Zakala made numerous key defensive plays to keep the Pioneers’ offense at bay. In her 75 games as a Cardinal, she recorded seven defensive saves.

With a 12-9 overall record, Fisher set a new program record for wins in a single season.
