St. John Fisher College’s Brad Rush (Charles D’Amico/Albion), a junior on the baseball team (7-2), has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2013.
In a 4-1 week for the Cardinals, all taking place at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, FL, Rush batted .363 (8-for-22) with two extra-base hits, seven runs scored and three RBI.
Rush got hot in the last three games in Florida, generating two hits in each of those contests. Fisher had a doubleheader on Friday against Penn State Abington, where Rush dominated at the plate. In the first game, Rush hit his first home run of the year, going 2-for-4 at the dish with three RBI and a run scored in a 10-4 win. For the nightcap with Abington, Rush went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double as Fisher completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory.
The Cardinals’ trip ended on Saturday with a game against Union College. Fisher won 6-0 over the Dutchmen, with Rush going 2-for-4 in the batter’s box with two runs scored.
On the season, the Albion native leads the team in several categories. Rush has the team lead in slugging percentage (.649), hits (13), total bases (24) and doubles (4) while he is tied for the lead in runs scored (11) and runs batted in (7). What may be the most impressive statistic for Rush is he has struck out just three times in 41 plate appearances.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Thursday as Rush in the gang travel to SUNY Fredonia for a single, nine-inning game.
