St. John Fisher College’s Chaz Lott (Christian Brothers Academy/Wynantskill), a freshman on the men’s basketball team (17-8, 12-4 E8), has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 17, 2013.
In a 3-0 week for the Cardinals, Lott was a dominant performer in each of the contests. The freshman led Fisher in scoring in two of the games and was tied for the team-high in the other win. He accumulated 49 points (16.3 ppg), 19 rebounds (6.3 rpg), 15 assists (5.0 apg) and 7 steals (2.3 spg) for the week.
Fisher opened the week on the road Tuesday at archrival Nazareth College in the middle of a close and heated battle for a spot in the Empire 8 Championship. The Cardinals played one of their most complete games of the season at Kidera Gymnasium, defeating the Golden Flyers 78-50 behind Lott’s 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. The guard shot 7-for-10 from the field, attacking the basket and getting to the rim at will.
The Cardinals then opened the final regular season Empire 8 weekend by hosting Hartwick College on Friday night. After a fairly even first half, Fisher opened the game up in the second half, eventually beating the Hawks 77-60. Lott finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, once again filling the stat sheet.
On Saturday, Fisher welcomed the Empire 8 Conference leader, the No. 1 seed for the conference championship and nationally-ranked No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology into Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium. The Cardinals again played a well-rounded game, defeating the Ducks 82-73, solidifying a No. 3 seed for this weekend’s Empire 8 Conference Championship. Once again Fisher was led by Lott’s scoring, finishing the contest with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe. The Wynantskill native was not selfish, however, grabbing seven caroms and distributing six assists.
Fisher, currently riding an eight-game winning streak, will take on No. 2 Ithaca College at 8 p.m. on Friday night in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Conference Championship that will be hosted by Stevens in Hoboken, NJ.
