St. John Fisher College’s Justin Plata (St. John the Baptist/Wheatley Heights) of the men’s basketball team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 3, 2013.

In a 1-0 week for the Cardinals, Plata set the tone at Elmira College as Fisher took down the Soaring Eagles. The senior opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, just his 13th and 14th treys of the season. That six-point stretch in the opening four minutes gave the Cardinals a lead it would never relinquish for the duration of the contest.

Plata finished the game with a team-high 17 points, constantly beating Elmira defenders off the dribble as he extended the defense with his early shooting display. He also filled the stat sheet with three rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

Fisher will return to action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Houghton College to face provisionary Empire 8 Conference member. The game does not count towards the Cardinals’ conference records.
