St. John Fisher College’s John Whelehan (Notre Dame/Batavia), a senior on the men’s tennis, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 15, 2012.
In a 1-1 week for Fisher, Whelehan helped the Cardinals improve to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the Empire 8, but most importantly, the senior helped Fisher clinch a bid to the Empire 8 Championship. On Thursday, Whelehan won both his matches against Alfred leading Fisher to a 5-4 win over the host Saxons.
At first singles, Whelehan defeated his opponent in three sets with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 score. The Batavia native also won his match at second doubles as he and Daniel Parshall teamed up to earn a point with an 8-4 victory.
On Wednesday the Cardinals saw a 6-3 defeat to Nazareth, with Whelehan dropping his doubles match by a close 8-6 score. The loss was the duo’s first in four matches, as Whelehan and Parshall have claimed four out of their last five doubles matchups.
Fisher will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Monday when it travels to SUNY Oswego to take on the Lakers.
