St. John Fisher College’s Meghan Soja (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) of the women’s basketball team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 26, 2012.
Soja played in her last game for Fisher in the semifinal of the Empire 8 Conference Championship, leading the No. 4 Cardinals against the No. 1 host Ithaca College Bombers. Despite losing 72-43 and battling foul trouble, Soja still managed to just miss a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine boards. The senior shot 4-for-6 from the field and added an assist in the effort.
Last week the Conference named Soja to its second team for her leadership in the post for the Cardinals. Soja led both the Cardinals and the Empire 8 in several categories; most impressively she led the league in steals per game (2.9). She was also a leader in field goal percentage (43.8%), points per game (13.0) and rebounds (8.3).
Fisher finished the season with an 11-15 mark and posting a 7-7 record in the Conference, making the postseason once again. The 2012-13 campaign should be exciting with many young student-athletes developing this year by seeing a good amount of time on the floor.
