St. John Fisher College’s Mandi Mereness (Victor/Farmington) of the volleyball team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 23, 2011.
Mereness was also named Player of the Week by the Empire 8 Conference for her performances.
Despite starting the week off with a 3-1 loss at Rochester Institute of Technology last Tuesday, Mereness helped lead Fisher to an undefeated record (3-0) at the Empire 8 Crossover hosted at Fisher this past weekend.
In four contests this week, Mereness recorded a team high 23 total blocks, pushing her team-leading season total to 54. The sophomore also played a big role in the attack for the Cardinals after tallying 33 kills for the week. In Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Nazareth, she managed to score the final three points in the fifth set to secure a 15-13 victory for the Cardinals. Mereness also finished the game with a game high .421 hitting percentage.
The Cardinals are now 18-9 on the season, and return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they host SUNY Fredonia.
