St. John Fisher College has selected #Stephanie Sweeney# of the women’s basketball team as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 15, 2009.
In a 2-0 week that saw the Cardinals take care of business on the road and at home, Sweeney filled the stat sheet in both contests. The junior point guard averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds during the week, while also totaling nine assists and three steals.
On Tuesday Fisher defeated R.I.T. at home, 76-66, and Sweeney contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block in the win.
Fisher then traveled to Ithaca on Saturday and got a 56-45 win behind another stat filling effort by Sweeney. Besides tallying 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, while adding a steal and a block, Sweeney also hit a timely 3-pointer that stopped a 7-0 Ithaca run to start the second half. The three put the Cardinals back up by five, a margin that would hold up for the duration of the game.
On the year, Sweeney is first on the team in assists (85) and steals (68), third in scoring (7.1 points/game), and fourth in rebounding (4.8 rebounds/game).
Fisher (15-7 overall, 8-5 Empire 8), with Sweeney at the helm, will look to extend its four-game winning streak and clinch a bid to the Empire 8 Conference Championship when the Alfred University Saxons come into town at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
