St. John Fisher College’s #Michael Wopperer# has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 15, 2009.
In a 1-1 week that saw the Cardinals defeat previously league unbeaten Rochester Institute of Technology at home, Wopperer averaged a double-double with 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds, while also swatting three shots.
In a 72-51 win against R.I.T., Wopperer filled the stat sheet, tallying six points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and a steal. The win marked the Tigers’ first loss in the Empire 8 Conference and broke Fisher’s four-game losing streak.
On Saturday, Fisher suffered a 77-67 loss to the nationally ranked Ithaca College Bombers, despite Wopperer’s career day. The junior forward/center had has third career double-double, scoring a career and game-high 24 points while tying a career-high with 11 boards. In the game, Wopperer shot 11-for-22 (50%) from the field.
For the season, the backcourt presence is averaging a team-high 6.6 rebounds/game and leading the team in blocks (86), while also contributing as the third leading scorer with 8.3 points/game.
Fisher will return to action on Tuesday when they look to rebound quickly with win against the visiting Alfred University Saxons at 8 p.m.
